THROWING LARGER with Mark Griffiths - Sat 21st and Sun 22nd May
21st and 22nd May | 10am-5pm both days - Intermediate to Advanced Level Throwing
We are very lucky to have Master Potter Mark Griffiths return to teach at Crown Works for this one off specialist weekend course.
A two-day specialised workshop, during which time you will have the chance to improve your throwing, watch Mark demo different shapes and hear him talk about his practice.
This class would be most suitable for people who have taken at least one or more intermediate or more advanced courses. You will need to have some confidence and ability with your throwing techniques, so please contact Lucy to discuss before booking.
About Mark…
After two years working in three very different potteries Mark set up his first workshop in 1975 with the help of the then, CAC new craftsman grant. A move to West Wales to make domestic stoneware lasted three years before settling at his current location in Shropshire in a converted Village School. For twenty years Mark’s main production has been terracotta garden pots, selling from home and undertaking commissions for some of the great gardens throughout the UK. A return to stoneware in 2005 and wood firing has re-kindled his enthusiasm for this more considered work.
Mark fires in a wood and gas kiln using glazes made from materials found locally, wood ashes and quarry dust, often over slips dug from stream banks, and a local pool.
His wood kiln is a 70cu ft single chamber bourry-box kiln, fired to 1300 c and the gas kiln has a packing area of 70 cu ft and is fired to 1280 c.
Current work is woodfired stoneware with ash glazes and tenmoku.
Mark has a well deserved reputation as a “big ware “ thrower.
He is a Fellow of the CPA.
